Located in Puna, on the Big Island of Hawaii, the Center of Creativity is an oasis for anyone interested in arts, crafts, and creativity! It is a place where individuals of all ages can nurture their creative spirit.
Etta Mae is an artist, educator, and lifelong maker with a heart for gently nurturing creativity in people of all ages. From the time she could hold a needle and thread, Etta Mae has been stitching her way through the world as a maker. At 19, she began selling her handmade dolls and toys at local markets and craft fairs around Hawaii's Big Island. What began as a simple joy soon blossomed into a lifelong calling, leading her to earn a Waldorf Teaching Certificate specializing in Handwork from Rudolf Steiner College in 2012.
For the last 20 years, Etta Mae has shared her gifts as a Handwork and Arts teacher in both Waldorf and public schools, as well as in homeschool enrichment programs throughout Puna and beyond. In 2016, she founded The Center of Creativity, a studio space on her family farm where people of all ages gather to create, explore, and connect through meaningful, hands-on experiences.
Her teaching weaves together art, nature, and practical life skills — inspiring confidence, wonder, and joy. Today, Etta Mae continues to live and work on her family’s multigenerational homestead, offering programs that honor the beauty of craft and the spirit of community. Known for her warm, gentle guidance, Etta Mae tends to each student’s growing gifts, encouraging their creative voice to rise and be heard.
"I have a special interest in helping people learn how to use the plants, trees, rocks and soil in our local environment to create things that are both practical and beautiful. Working with our hands and making things that serve a real need in our lives, helps us unfold into our full human potential; instilling confidence in ourselves and a deep connection with the world." -Etta Mae
